Olivia Hayes loves Birmingham. From tubing down the Cahaba River and catching live music to creating real impact through her work at United Way of Central Alabama (UWCA), she’s actively involved in the community she calls home.
Olivia first connected with United Way in 2020 through the Loaned Executive program, which gave her insight into our work and led to a full-time role on the Community Impact team.
Today, Olivia supports programs such as the Early Learning Acceleration Institute (ELAI) and collaborates with local agencies to improve outcomes for children and families across Central Alabama.
A Birmingham native, Olivia graduated from the Alabama School of Fine Arts and earned degrees in Public Health and Sustainable Smart Cities from UAB. She brings that background to her work in early childhood education.
“I’ve learned so much here,” Olivia said. “Helping organize the Early Learning Acceleration Institute has shown me how complex the education system is. Early learning shapes the future of our whole community.”
What Many Don’t Know about UWCA
Olivia notes that many people think of UWCA as simply a fundraising organization. In reality, we do much more.
“We provide training and resources to partner agencies, lead programs like tutoring and early learning and work directly with community leaders to meet real-time needs,” she said.
She also shared a fun fact: UWCA has an employee band that plays at internal events.
Apply Now to Become a Loaned Executive
“Through the program, you see just how many lives UWCA touches, both through our own programs and through the work of our partners,” Olivia said. “If there’s a need in Central Alabama, UWCA is likely part of the solution.”
Applications for the Loaned Executive program are open through August 8th. The program runs from August 28th to mid-November. Participants include recent graduates, retirees, consultants and others exploring new career paths. Many companies loan select employees to UWCA; others sponsor individuals who apply directly.
Participants must have a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation and proof of insurance. They should also be motivated to commit to 13 weeks of meaningful work — promoting the important role that United Way plays in the community and helping raise funds that are critical to the operation of our many programs and partner agencies.
As Olivia puts it, “It’s great working in a place where people are eager to help the community — and each other.”
