At United Way of Central Alabama (UWCA), that growth shows up in both the work happening across the region and the careers of the people behind it.
One example is Leanna Polk. Her journey from intern to manager reflects how purpose- driven work can create opportunity while strengthening community impact.
From Intern to Manager
Leanna grew up in Mobile and moved north to attend the University of Alabama. While earning her master’s degree at Jacksonville State University, she secured an internship with UWCA’s Ryan White program in Birmingham — an experience that helped shape her career path.
After her internship, Leanna continued growing within the same department where she started. Today, she serves as a Ryan White Eligibility Manager, connecting low income, underinsured individuals living with HIV to essential medical care and supportive services.
The work blends her passion for social work with her commitment to helping others live healthier, more stable lives.
“UWCA really invests in employees and pays attention to your strengths and goals,” Leanna said. “I enjoy event planning, so I’ve been given opportunities to organize conferences and staff events. They’ve helped me build on what I’m passionate about.”
Collaboration and teamwork are central to her experience. Leanna credits colleagues and mentors with helping her grow professionally while staying connected to UWCA’s mission of improving lives across Central Alabama.
A Workplace Where Growth Is Encouraged

“There’s always room to grow and explore different interests,” she said. “Because of the variety of programs and projects here, there’s never a dull moment. Most importantly, you feel valued and appreciated.”
