Federal income tax returns are due on April 15th this year, and with the onset of tax season, United Way can help you complete your filing in no time, and for free.

You can file your own taxes for free in less than an hour through MyFreeTaxes, an online service developed by United Way Worldwide, in partnership with TaxSlayer, one of the top-rated tax software providers in the United States.

By logging onto MyFreeTaxes.com, users are guided through the process of collecting information from their financial documents, sending it to the IRS and even looking for additional credits that might otherwise be missed.

All that users need before filing online is their Social Security or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) and their official tax documents, whether they be W2s, 1099s or something else.

Since 2009, MyFreeTaxes has helped more than 1.3 million taxpayers claim every credit and deduction they deserve. These credits maximize filers’ refunds and provide important opportunities for individuals and families to build financial stability.

In addition to the written guides, users can also seek online chat support through the service or through IRS-certified tax specialists over the phone.

For millions of Americans, tax refunds and credits are essential to their financial stability and success. That’s why United Way helps people save more of their hard-earned money. Since its inception, MyFreeTaxes has been used by more than 1.3 million people, saving at least $260 million in tax-preparation fees.

In addition to the free online option, United Way of Central Alabama (UWCA) also offers free in-person tax preparation for qualified clients in our area. If your annual household income is $54,000 or less, you can simply call 2-1-1 to make an appointment with an IRS-certified tax volunteer on UWCA’s campus in Birmingham.

Tax preparation itself is but one of the many ways that UWCA seeks to improve the financial stability of residents throughout its six-county service area. In 2023, more than 27,000 individuals received financial counseling, job-relevant skills training and more through United Way.
