The J. Mason Davis Leadership Society is a United Way of Central Alabama (UWCA) donor network of African American leaders dedicated to creating lasting change. Throughout the past year, members contributed their time, talents and resources to support education, mentorship and equity across Central Alabama. Here is a look at the impact JMDLS achieved in 2025 and a preview of things to come
January
The year began at United Way’s 2025 Leaders United Kickoff at Vulcan Park and Museum. Members of Women United, the J. Mason Davis Leadership Society and the Young Philanthropists Society gathered to mark the start of the year and hear how leadership giving supports year-round volunteerism and community impact.
“The opportunities for networking, community engagement and learning from experts are invaluable for anyone looking to make a positive impact,” said Ike Mathews of Spire Energy.
February
JMDLS hosted its second annual Meeting of the Minds at Lawson State Community College, convening educators and community leaders to examine barriers to student success across Central Alabama. Panelists discussed how poverty, food insecurity and funding inequities affect learning outcomes and highlighted the importance of coordinated community support.
June
In June, JMDLS recognized Juneteenth as a time to reflect on Black freedom, progress and the ongoing work required to expand opportunity and equity throughout Central Alabama.
July
JMDLS held its second annual Day of Mentoring at Girls Inc., sponsored by Regions Bank. Students participated in hands-on workshops led by local professionals. The workshops focused on career paths, financial literacy, business etiquette and more.
“Having role models who listen, encourage and believe in a student’s potential can completely shift the trajectory of their life,” said Val Williams of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama.
August
Members supported early literacy by volunteering with United Way’s Success By 6 program, reading to children at early learning centers and donating books for classrooms. The effort reflected J. Mason Davis’s long-standing commitment to literacy and school readiness.
“It might feel simple to sit and read a few stories, but to a child it can be the highlight of their day,” said Jasmine Wright of Protective Life.
October
Members gathered at the Woodlawn Theatre for the J. Mason Davis Leadership Society’s Campaign kickoff under United Way’s 2025 campaign theme WHY WE UNITE. Dr. Regina Thompson, Superintendent of Fairfield City Schools, shared how UWCA’s inCommunity initiative is strengthening schools by connecting families to academic, health and social services.
“It’s not just about helping; it’s about helping in a meaningful and sustainable way,” Thompson said.
December
The year concluded with the JMDLS annual Book Bagging event in partnership with Success By 6. Volunteers assembled 550 book bags, distributing nearly 2,750 books to support kindergarten readiness through early access to books and learning resources.
Looking Ahead to 2026
JMDLS will continue its focus on leadership engagement, education and service in the year ahead. The 2026 calendar includes opportunities for learning, volunteerism and community leadership.
